Chapter 11
The next morning, Robbie drove into the city like a tiger was on his tail. The wind felt wonderful, kind of cleansing. He pushed the car to the limits of what it could do. At one point he passed a police officer along the road, but the fellow could do no more than shake a fist and swear. The police were going to have to get cars of their own if they wanted to keep pace with progress.
Reluctantly he parked in Weehawken. He walked to the ferry office, and plunked down his money for passage. They really needed to build a bridge that would link the rest of the civilized world to Manhattan. He would much rather be racing along at his own speed, rather than plodding at the pace of a ferry.
On another day he might have been delighted at his timing, but today, the twenty minutes he had to wait for the ferry to cast off were interminable. He prowled the decks, pacing off his unease, as if his measured tread might encourage the ship to go faster.
His conversation with Julia had gone all wrong. He had wanted to warn her about Friedrich and tell her what he had discovered. Heâd known that she wouldnât be happy with the news and had armed himself with gifts, but sheâd still managed to catch him off guard.
Heâd reacted badly. He should have kept his fool mouth shut. That seemed to be a recurring theme for him. He hadnât even gotten around to bringing Friedrich up in the conversation.
Worst of all, she had been right. He had allowed the easy assumptions of his parents and friends to color his behavior toward Geraldine. If he was honest he too had assumed that they would end up married in some hazy, far distant future. But it had all been very amorphous, just like everything else in his future.
It was timeâpast time reallyâthat he decide. Really decide, not drift along with the current of events, but determine what he wanted in life, and what he was willing to do to get it.
He had some thinking to do.
But first he needed to learn more about Friedrich Bauer and figure out whether the fellow was a threat.
The great ferry pulled into the dock on the other side of the river and Robbie was the first in line to disembark. Normally he wouldnât have minded getting in line. But today he was on a mission. He didnât have the patience to wait on little old ladies and wailing toddlers.
He had already talked to the police in Tuxedo. Since he didnât want to harm Friedrichâs reputation without cause, however, he hadnât learned much. Just that there had never been any complaints about him at the Park. Nor did he have any criminal record so far as they were aware.
The gangplank was hardly in place before Robbie was striding across it and up to the bank of cabbies. With a flick of a coin he hired the first in the row.
